Cream Cushion - Moderne Size:LargeWere particularly fond of a distinctive porcelain movement that flourished in Vallauris, southeastern France, during the 60s and 70s. This playful, modern aesthetic can be seen in the ceramics of Jean Derval, which at the time evoked [in the French] an insatiable appetite for abstract, folksy forms. Translating an aesthetic into a new medium is always a thrill, and here we use needlepoint to create our own interpretation of Dervals abstract forms.

Each wallhanging is crafted using cut-paper collage techniques

'Vessel' is framed in a 69mm-wide tray frame with a fumed oak finish

The result is a stitch that appears remarkably even

sagey greens and off-white contrast dramatically with a dark blue background in silk velvet

resulting in a richly tactile finish

Here we have reimagined the joyously abstract forms associated with this period of ceramics as a large-scale tapestry wall hanging
